Release date: 05/05/2008 Contact Information: Bonnie Smith, 215-814-5543, smith.bonnie@epa.gov PHILADELPHIA (May 5, 2008) - It took only 10 weeks for college students from among 74 mid-Atlantic region schools competing in a nation-wide recycling competition to prevent 7.7 million pounds of material from ending up in landfills or incinerated. In Pennsylvania, Dickinson College took top honors for recycling 100,910 pounds of material during the contest known as RecycleMania. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's mid-Atlantic regional office promotes RecycleMania as a way to encourage colleges and universities to reduce their waste. The competition pits colleges against each other to see which ones can collect the most recyclables in 10 weeks.
